The residents of Coweta and Fayette counties
enjoy the lush green landscapes here—and so do the animals that live in
the area. It’s not too surprising that there are quite a few local horse farms
and other businesses that cater to the equine set.
Meadow Wood Farm
At Meadow Wood Farm in Sharpsburg, the
family-oriented atmosphere is the perfect setting for your equine adventures.
Started over 18 years ago, Meadow Wood Farm offers everything from pasture
boarding and stall boarding to training and sales and leases of horses and
ponies—and, of course, horse-riding lessons.
The friendly staff offers lessons for both
adults and children and caters to everyone, from novices to advanced riders.
Clients can choose from private, semi-private or group lessons. There are also
summer camps available.
“We keep a safe and fun atmosphere for all
here,” says trainer Brittany Sommers. “We love our horses and make sure that
our riders and horses or ponies are well-suited to one another.”
Meadow Wood Farm hosts horse shows and gets
involved in some of the shows at other local farms. “We specialize in
hunter/jumpers and participate in the Georgia Hunter Jumper Association horse
shows,” Brittany explains.
For more information on lessons and their
many other services, contact Meadow Wood Farm at 770-254-9079.

The Steeplechase of Callaway
Held at Callaway Gardens, the Steeplechase at
Callaway draws friends and family together on the first Saturday in November as
they watch thoroughbred horses race over hurdles of timber and brush on a
course set in a picturesque 200-acre site of rolling hills filled with pines
and hardwoods.
The day is a family-friendly event with many
other activities, including the Midland Foxhound Parade and a performance by
the Atholl Highland Bagpipers. Children may enjoy pony rides, rock wall
climbing, moon walk and much more throughout the day. There are even Terrier
races, a Hat Contest and the Galloping Gourmet Chef competition where local
restaurants compete by making signature dishes.
The Steeplechase at Callaway is a non-profit
organization and has a partnership with the Veterinary School of Medicine at
Auburn University. Proceeds are divided among the Columbus Museum, Ida Cason
Callaway Foundation, Columbus Symphony Orchestra, Springer Opera House and
